TL;DR — the one-page answer
Q1 — Skills. The interview bar for ₹20 L+ is not secret and not college-dependent:
- DSA: fluent at LeetCode mediums in 20–25 min, some hards. ~400–600 quality problems; after ~100 mediums, shift to hards. Beyond ~500 there are sharply diminishing returns (interviewing.io study, DATA).
- Machine coding / LLD (Flipkart, Swiggy, Razorpay, PhonePe, Uber): working, OOP, extensible code in 90 min.
- CS fundamentals: OS, DBMS/SQL, CN, OOP — asked as OA MCQs and 5–15 min interview segments.
- One deep, deployed project you can defend line by line + ideally an internship or GSoC/LFX.
- Behavioural: STAR stories (Amazon Leadership Principles, Atlassian values, Google "Googlyness").
- Aptitude only matters for Goldman Sachs / banks and mass recruiters — not Amazon, Google, Uber, Flipkart.
The real problem for non-IIT grads is not the interview — it's getting shortlisted. The fixes: open hiring challenges, referrals, and verifiable signals that replace the college tag (contest rating, GSoC/LFX, a real internship, a deployed product).
Q2 — Hackathons that genuinely accept any college (best first):
| # | Challenge | Why | Reported outcome |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Flipkart GRiD | Officially open to all engineering colleges, individual sign-up, free | SDE-1 ~₹32 L headline |
| 2 | Juspay Hiring Challenge | No college filter, any branch | PPO ₹21–27 L (after 8–12 mo internship) |
| 3 | Amazon HackOn | CGPA ≥ 6.5, cross-college teams OK | PPI → SDE-1 (~₹46 L headline / ~₹25 L Y1) |
| 4 | Infosys HackWithInfy | Open | Specialist Programmer L3 up to ₹21 L |
| 5 | Meesho Open Campus, Myntra RampUp | Open campus drives | ~₹20 L / ₹16–18 L |
| W | Women only: Myntra WeForShe, Walmart CodeHers, Amex Makeathon, Atlassian WiT, BNY Code Divas, DESIS Ascend | Strong pipelines | ₹18–27 L range reported |
Avoid planning around: Google Code Jam / Kick Start (discontinued 2023), Uber HackTag (no edition since 2022), Goldman Sachs India Hackathon (college list restricted — but GS's Engineering Campus Hiring is open).
Q3 — Who pays non-IIT grads ₹20 L+ (evidence of actually hiring them): Amazon, Goldman Sachs, Microsoft, Google, D. E. Shaw, Salesforce, Adobe, PhonePe, Groww, Zomato, CRED, Flipkart, Juspay, Infosys SP-L3, Myntra, Media.net, GoDaddy, BNY, MakeMyTrip, Tekion, Visa, Arcesium, Walmart, Rubrik (rare). ₹15–20 L: Infosys SP-L2, Walmart, Myntra RampUp, Jio, Sprinklr (Cloud), Cisco, Qualcomm, JPMorgan, Deutsche Bank, Amex, Paytm, Samsung R&D. Effectively IIT-only: quant/HFT (Quadeye, Graviton, Tower, IMC…), Glean/Databricks, Atlassian (except WiT).
How rare is it? At a good tier-2 college (LNMIIT 2025-26) ~14% of offers were ₹20 L+ and 31% were ₹15 L+. At VIT roughly 5% of offers cross ₹20 L. At IIIT Allahabad the median is ₹26 L. At tier-3 colleges the typical outcome is ₹3.4–4.5 L mass recruiters — so ₹20 L+ from tier-3 almost always means off-campus.
0. Reality check: how hard is ₹20 LPA?
- levels.fyi, entry-level SWE India (2,693 self-reports): median ₹13.55 L, p75 ₹23.3 L, p90 ₹31.2 L → ₹20 L+ is roughly the top quartile of people who bother reporting (levels.fyi, DATA).
- Amazon SDE-I India median total comp ≈ ₹28 L (levels.fyi, DATA).
- The market is tighter than 2021–22: Xpheno reported entry-level (0–2 yr) openings down 44% YoY and the fresher share of tech hiring falling from ~28% (2024) to ~15% (2025); ~52% of demand in emerging tech (AI, cloud, security) (Outlook Business, DATA secondhand).
Implication: ₹20 L+ is achievable from any college, but it is a top-quartile outcome. Plan for it seriously (12+ months), and have a ₹10–15 L fallback that you'd still be happy to take (see Tanay Pratap's view in §6).
Q1. What skills do you need for ₹20 LPA+?
1.1 DSA — the main filter
Topics that recur across interview write-ups: arrays & strings (two pointers, sliding window), hashing, trees, graphs (BFS/DFS, shortest path, topological sort), dynamic programming, greedy & intervals, heaps, binary search on answer, recursion/backtracking, bit manipulation (Amazon WoW).
The often-quoted "trees/graphs/DP are 70% of FAANG questions" has no traceable method (InterviewKickstart, CLAIM). Treat as direction only.
What each company's coding bar looks like:
| Company | OA | Interviews | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Amazon SDE-1 | 2 coding Qs / 70 min (HackerRank) + Work Simulation + Workstyles | Brute → optimised; graphs, hashmaps, sliding window, recursion→DP | BossCoder, ANEC |
| Microsoft | 2 coding + MCQs (OS, DBMS, CN) | "Medium-to-hard LeetCode"; 2D grid, strings; dry-run + edge cases expected | GfG, ANEC, DevsUnite, ANEC |
| Google L3 | — | 3 DSA rounds + 1 Googlyness | LeetCode, ANEC |
| Uber | CodeSignal, 3–4 Qs / ~60 min, increasing difficulty | 2 LC-medium rounds + behavioural (+ LLD often) | CodeKerdos, ANEC |
| Flipkart (GRiD) | 90 min, 3 Qs | Machine coding + resume deep-dive + techno-managerial | GfG GRiD 7.0, ANEC |
| Flipkart / Meesho | — | "One hard LC-equivalent where CP background helps" | HireStepX, CLAIM |
How many problems? The only real dataset — interviewing.io linked ~700 users' LeetCode stats to 100k+ real interviews (DATA):
- LeetCode contest rating showed no correlation with interview performance.
- Number of problems solved correlated modestly (r ≈ 0.27).
- Top performers mostly plateaued around ~500 problems; "seriously diminishing returns" after.
- 50 hard problems ≈ +7 interview-percentile points vs +3 for 50 mediums → after ~100 mediums, shift your mix to hards.
Community folklore (weaker): "700+ problems & 1800–2000 LC rating for FAANG" (Blind, ANEC); tier-3 success stories citing 800–1,300 solved (Rehearsal, ANEC).
Do ratings matter? For shortlisting, yes — a rating is a verifiable number that stands in for a college name. Commonly cited bars (all CLAIM, HireStepX): Codeforces Expert (1600+) or CodeChef 4★ (1800+); Razorpay/Zepto/Juspay reportedly value "200+ LC solves" over ratings. For passing interviews, the data says ratings don't predict it — so chase a rating for the resume, but practise timed mediums/hards for the interview.
Readiness benchmark (NeetCode): you can solve an unseen medium in 20–25 minutes (neetcode.io). If stuck 15–20 min, read the solution, then re-solve it days later.
Pick ONE structured sheet and finish it:
| Sheet | Size | Best for | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Striver A2Z | ~450 items, 19 modules, ~6 months | Beginner → advanced, most-used in India | Free core; TUF+ ₹4.8–12K/yr for extras. Since 2025 some in-site practice links are TUF+ only |
| Striver SDE Sheet | ~190 | Last 2–3 months revision | Free |
| NeetCode 150 / 250 | 150–250, 18 topics | Fastest interview-focused path | Free |
| Love Babbar 450 | 450, ~2–3 months | Breadth | Free |
| Arsh Goyal sheet | Company PYQs (Microsoft, Amazon, Adobe) | Company-targeted | Free |
| Rohit Negi (Coder Army) | 726 | Tier-2/3 off-campus grind | Free |
| Aditya Verma playlists | DP / recursion / binary search / sliding window | Pattern depth (knapsack, LCS, MCM families) | Free (index) |
1.2 Machine coding / LLD — the Indian product-company differentiator
This is the round non-IIT candidates most often under-prepare for.
| Company | Format | Example problems | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flipkart | 90 min; code must compile & run; 2 SDEs run test cases and probe extensibility & edge cases | Tree-tuple validator; best-selling products w/ returns & blacklist | FinalRound, GfG Set 40 |
| Swiggy | 60–90 min, design + implement | Snake & Ladder, order dispatch, menu catalogue | AccioJob |
| Razorpay | Machine coding / LLD with screen-share demo | Parking lot, cart, notification service | LeetCode, SpaceComplexity |
| PhonePe | 90 min on CodeSignal | TODO list with analytics | Medium |
| Uber | LLD "often" for backend SDE-1 | — | CodeKerdos |
How to prepare (ANEC consensus): revise OOP + SOLID + a few patterns (Strategy, Factory, Observer, Singleton); build 5–8 classics from scratch in 90 min each — parking lot, library management, Splitwise/expense sharing, pub-sub/message queue, ride-sharing, snake & ladder, rate limiter, LRU cache, in-memory key-value store. Keep code "simple, clean and coherent", separate models/services, handle edge cases, and clarify requirements aloud first. Use a language you model classes cleanly in (Java/C++/Python all accepted; no evidence any company penalises language choice).
1.3 CS fundamentals (OS, DBMS, CN, OOP)
- Appear as OA MCQs (Microsoft) and 5–15 min segments inside technical rounds; rarely a standalone round at FAANG-type firms, heavier at Microsoft and on-campus drives (DevsUnite, FacePrep).
- Flipkart via GRiD: schema design, queries, ACID, TTL for a ticket-booking MVP (GfG, ANEC).
- Must-know list:
- OS: processes vs threads, scheduling, deadlocks (conditions, avoidance), synchronisation (mutex/semaphore), paging, virtual memory, thrashing.
- DBMS/SQL: normalisation, indexing (B+ tree), ACID, transactions & isolation levels, joins, nested queries, window functions, SQL vs NoSQL; for backend roles add sharding/replication.
- CN: OSI/TCP-IP, TCP vs UDP, 3-way handshake, HTTP/HTTPS/TLS, DNS resolution, "what happens when you type a URL".
- OOP: four pillars with real examples, interfaces vs abstract classes, composition vs inheritance.
- Budget: 4–6 weeks part-time (StudyBench, CLAIM; lists: GfG).
1.4 System design for freshers
- LLD is the norm; HLD (load balancers, sharding) is mostly SDE-2+ (Preplaced, AlgoMaster; Flipkart: SD at SDE-2+ per FinalRound).
- Light HLD does show up: Microsoft fresher — underspecified notification system testing requirement gathering (DevsUnite, ANEC); Flipkart GRiD — ticket-booking MVP.
- Take-away: know the vocabulary (caching, queues, DB choice, horizontal scaling, rate limiting) well enough to reason out loud; Gaurav Sen's free YouTube channel is the standard intro.
1.5 Projects, internships, open source
- Projects get interrogated. "Be very thorough with your resume, as most of the questions were based directly on it" — Flipkart selectee (GfG, ANEC). Microsoft's final round was a deep-dive into one real project (DevsUnite, ANEC). Flipkart GRiD round 1 screens profiles before any coding.
- What counts: solves a real problem, deployed at a live URL, real users if possible, commit history showing weeks of work (not "Initial commit / Final version") (Let's Code). Stacks that map to demand: full-stack (Next.js/Node/Postgres), backend + cloud (Java/Go + AWS), applied AI (RAG/agents with evals, deployed) — "strong DSA + one deployed AI project" is called the differentiator for Google India (FacePrep, CLAIM).
- Harkirat's caution: token open-source PRs made for visibility are worth little; real contributions count (summary).
- Paid, verifiable open-source programmes that replace a college brand: GSoC, LFX Mentorship, Outreachy, MLH Fellowship. Tier-3 students cite GSoC as their differentiator (MentorCruise, DEV) — no data linking it to offer rates, though.
- Internships: even a small paid startup internship is leverage; converting one (Juspay, Groww, PhonePe 6-month internships) is one of the most common ₹20 L+ routes in the tier-2 data below.
1.6 Aptitude — where it matters and where it doesn't
| Matters | Doesn't matter much |
|---|---|
| Goldman Sachs — e.g. a 2025 India Engineering Analyst test: 60 reasoning Qs (numerical computation, numerical reasoning, abstract/diagrammatic, puzzles) + comprehension (Code360, ANEC); HackerRank OA may include maths/probability MCQs (GraduatesFirst) | Amazon — OA is coding + Work Simulation/Workstyles (behavioural), no quant |
| D. E. Shaw Ascend — 8 aptitude/fundamentals MCQs + 2 coding (GfG) | Uber, Flipkart, Google — pure coding OAs |
| Amazon HackOn / WoW — logical reasoning + MCQs in round 1 | Microsoft — MCQs are CS fundamentals, not quant |
| Mass recruiters (TCS NQT, Infosys, AMCAT, eLitmus → Samsung) |
Take-away: 2–3 weeks of aptitude (probability, P&C, puzzles, data interpretation) only if you're targeting banks/fintech GCCs or mass drives as a fallback.
1.7 Behavioural & communication
- Amazon: 16 Leadership Principles; SDE-1 loops focus on ~5–6; each interviewer assigned 2–3 LPs; STAR answers with metrics (amazon.jobs, CO, IGotAnOffer). Prepare ~8 stories (conflict, failure, ownership, tight deadline, learning fast, disagreeing with a senior, customer obsession, simplifying something).
- Atlassian: separate values and leadership interviews for graduates (Atlassian early-careers guide, CO).
- Google: 1 of 4 onsite rounds is Googlyness.
- Inside technical rounds: dry-run, generate your own edge cases, narrate — "they're measuring whether you can be wrong out loud without shutting down" (DevsUnite). Keerti Purswani: "talk while we code", do mock interviews (GfG).
1.8 The real bottleneck for non-IIT: getting shortlisted
- Top product companies generally don't visit tier-3 campuses; an estimated 45–60% of placed tier-3 students get their first offer off-campus/pool drives (PapersAdda, CLAIM).
- Referrals: US data — ~7% of applicants but 30–50% of hires; ~4× more likely to get an offer (Zippia, Pinpoint). No India-specific dataset found, but Indian anecdotes agree: "your only real chances are being contacted by a recruiter or getting a referral" (Blind, ANEC).
- Profile before the ask. Arsh Goyal gates his referrals on visible CP/DSA activity (Telegram) — employees refer people they can vouch for.
- Cold outreach that works: personalised, researched, asks for a conversation; resume only in message 2–3 (Extern, Career Sidekick). Target ~50 companies/month and build 5+ connections who can refer (Rehearsal, CLAIM).
- Timelines are slow: one Google applicant applied Apr 2025, first recruiter contact Aug 2025 (Medium, ANEC). Apply early, track everything (use the site's Application tracker).
Signals that substitute for the college tag, ranked by how verifiable they are:
- Winning/placing in an open hiring challenge (GRiD, HackOn, Juspay…) — direct interview.
- A real internship (especially a convertible 6-month one).
- GSoC / LFX / Outreachy / MLH.
- Contest rating (CF Expert / CC 4★ / LC Knight+).
- A deployed product with real users.
- Referral from someone who has seen 1–5.
Q2. Hackathons & open hiring challenges that lead to ₹15–20 LPA+
CTC/stipend figures mostly come from aggregators (Unstop, PrepInsta, TNP Officer, TalentD), not official brochures — marked reported. Verify each season against the official page.

Notes & participant tips
- Flipkart GRiD — the single best bet. Individual registration; Flipkart forms teams only in the final (PrepInsta). Rounds: profile screening → 90-min proctored coding → case-study code round → 24-hr Bengaluru finale. GRiD 7.0 had 1.4 lakh+ registrations (Placement Officer). Since round 1 screens profiles, have projects on the resume before June.
- Amazon HackOn — 100-min test (DSA + logical reasoning + GenAI basics) → 48-hr virtual build → mentorship → in-person finale. Cross-college teams let you team up with strong coders elsewhere.
- Juspay — MCQ (30 Qs / 30 min) → 90-min coding → interviews. Candidates describe a longer hackathon round on the "Tree of Space" lock/unlock problem on M-ary trees; ~80% test cases needed, 15–20% advance (PlacementPreps). The ₹21–27 L PPO depends on internship performance, and the internship is long, in-office and ₹40 K/mo.
- Walmart CodeHers — 25-min MCQ + 90-min coding (2 problems) + interviews; richest published package among women's programmes; the 7+ CGPA cut-off is the main barrier.
- Walmart Sparkathon — judged: innovation 25%, feasibility 20%, scalability 15%, problem understanding 20%, presentation 20% (TheNewViews).
- Amex Makeathon finalist tips: research the problem deeply, show flowcharts/system design, make a demo video, build a working prototype that makes business sense (GfG).
- D. E. Shaw Ascend — resume screen → 90-min HackerRank (8 MCQ + 2 medium-hard coding, no going back) → 45-min technical interview (linked lists, graphs).
- HackWithInfy — solving ~1.5–2 of 3 questions typically reaches the finale; the SP L3 ₹21 L track is the prize, not the default DSE role.
Calendar (month the challenge typically opens)

Traps just below the band: several firms bring lower tracks to tier-2 campuses than to IITs — Swiggy off-campus aSDE ₹8.3 L, Flipkart non-SDE (supply chain ₹14.5 L), Sprinklr Cloud Engineer vs Product Engineer. Check the role title, not just the company name.
3.3 ₹20 L+ employers that are effectively IIT / top-NIT only
- Quant / HFT — Quadeye, Graviton, Tower Research, NK Securities, Da Vinci, IMC, APT Portfolio, Quantbox: ₹90 L–₹2.5 Cr+ at IIT Kharagpur (IITian Vibes). A Quadeye internship posting required IIT + 8.5 CGPA (Business Today). No non-IIT fresher offers found. (Exception route: very high Codeforces/ICPC standing.)
- AI product firms — Glean, Databricks: seen only in IIT KGP's ₹1 Cr+ band.
- Atlassian — near-zero fresher hiring outside top campuses except via Women in Tech.
- Texas Instruments — mostly IIT/NIT/BITS, ECE/EEE.
- Uber, Sprinklr (Product Engineer), Nutanix — top campuses in practice.
4. What the median actually looks like
| College | Group | Median (B.Tech) | Other stats | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| IIT Kharagpur (reference) | IIT | ₹20.66 L (NIRF 2026) | +4.5% YoY, flat after inflation | IITian Vibes |
| IIIT Hyderabad | a | ₹32 L (NIRF 2025, 177 placed) | CSE avg ₹31.98 L | Shiksha |
| IIIT Allahabad | a | ₹26 L (2026: 433/470 placed) | Avg ₹33.35 L → >50% crossed ₹20 L | CollegeForMe |
| NIT Warangal | a | n/r | Early 2025-26: avg ₹26 L; 200+ offers > ₹20 L, 125 > ₹30 L | Careers360 |
| NIT Trichy | a | ₹14.35 L (NIRF 2025; 791/1,029 placed) | ~85% placed | Collegedunia |
| NIT Surathkal | a | ₹14 L (2025; 80.6% placed) | Avg ₹17.48 L; CSE avg ₹26.85 L | CollegeDost |
| LNMIIT (2025-26 tracker) | b | ~₹12.6 L median offer | 31% of offers ≥ ₹15 L; 14% ≥ ₹20 L | tracker |
| Thapar | b | ₹10 L (NIRF 2026; 1,900/2,205 placed) | ₹10–11.9 L over 2022–24 | Shiksha |
| Manipal (MIT) | b | ~₹9.7–10 L | Avg ₹12.31 L | Shiksha |
| VIT (4 campuses) | b | ₹8.99 L (2025) | 2026: 696 offers > ₹20 L of 14,000+ → ~5% | CollegeDekho, VIT |
| Typical tier-3 | c | n/r (no verifiable report) | Mass recruiters: TCS Ninja ~₹3.4 L, Cognizant GenC, Wipro ₹3.4–4.5 L | PrepInsta |
LNMIIT counts offers, not students, and includes PPO-conditional internship rows and self-reported off-campus offers — the true share of students at ₹20 L+ is probably lower.
What it means:
- Top IIITs and NIT CSE — ₹20 L+ is normal. IIIT-H/IIIT-A medians beat IIT KGP's overall median.
- Good tier-2 — ₹20 L+ is the top ~5–15%, concentrated in big tech, product, and GCCs; usually via internship conversion.
- Tier-3 — ₹20 L+ comes almost entirely from off-campus + open challenges. Your campus placement cell is the fallback, not the plan.
- Branch matters as much as college: NIT Surathkal overall avg ₹17.5 L vs CSE avg ₹26.9 L.
5. CTC vs in-hand — don't get fooled by the headline
Rules: monthly salary comes from base only (taxed at the 30% slab at these levels); joining / relocation / retention bonuses are one-time and usually clawed back if you leave within 12 months; stock is often back-loaded; private-company ESOPs are illiquid until an IPO/buyback.
| Offer | Headline | Breakdown | Real Y1 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Amazon SDE-1 (tier-3, Feb 2025) | ₹46.3 L | Base ₹19.17 L + sign-on ₹6.47 L (Y1) & ₹5.18 L (Y2) + relocation ₹1.5 L + RSUs ₹15.56 L over 4 yrs vesting 5/15/40/40 | ~₹25 L; ~₹1.6 L/mo gross. Only ~₹0.8 L stock in Y1 (LeetCode) |
| CRED L3 (IIIT) | "₹54 L" | ₹24 L base + ₹2 L joining + ESOPs ₹28 L vesting 10/20/30/40 | ₹28.8 L, ESOPs illiquid (LeetCode) |
| Goldman Sachs Analyst (off-campus) | ₹36.5 L | ₹23 L base + ₹7 L sign-on/relocation + ₹6.5 L bonus | ₹36.5 L Y1, ~₹29.5 L recurring; all cash, no stock (LeetCode) |
| Visa (tier-1) | ~₹35 L | ₹15 L base; ₹18 L target with variable/PF/gratuity; $18 K stock vesting 20/20/60 over 3 yrs | ~₹22–27 L (LeetCode) |
| Groww (tier-2) | ₹26 L | ₹18 L fixed + ₹2 L variable + ₹2 L joining + ₹4 L ESOPs | ~₹20–22 L (LeetCode) |
| PhonePe (off-campus) | ~₹31 L | First offer ₹19.25 L + ₹3 L joining + ₹8.5 L ESOPs/4 yrs → negotiated to ₹20 L + ₹5 L | ~₹25 L (LeetCode) |
Negotiation works even for freshers — the PhonePe example gained ~₹3 L in year one with a competing offer. Compare offers on base + Y1, not headline.
6. What Indian tech creators say (Arsh Goyal, Striver, Love Babbar, Harkirat…)
YouTube transcripts can't be fetched, so this is from creators' own sites, LinkedIn/X posts, sheets, interviews and third-party summaries. Quotes are only those present in pages read.
Creator by creator
| Creator | Background | Core advice for non-IIT / tier-3 | Free resources | Paid |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Raj Vikramaditya (Striver), takeUforward | Tier-3 — Jalpaiguri Govt. Engg College (IT, 2020); Amazon intern → Media.net → Google Warsaw (LinkedIn) | Faced 3–4 LPA campus averages and "tier 1/2 only" postings; persistence + seizing one chance: "ek mauka ek din aaega, usko jaane mat dena bas" (post). Built a peer coding club whose alumni reached Google/Amazon/Microsoft (Business Today). One-page resume; "the ingredients inside it take years" | A2Z sheet (~450), SDE sheet, YouTube playlists | TUF+ ₹4.8–12 K/yr (DSA, LLD/HLD, core CS, "AI Pass") |
| Arsh Goyal | NIT Jalandhar (ECE, gold medal) → ISRO → Samsung (LinkedIn) | Company-PYQ-driven prep; has offered referrals gated on visible CP/DSA activity (Telegram) | DSA Sheet by Arsh (4,000+ users, 250+ colleges) | CodeChef/Unacademy content |
| Love Babbar, CodeHelp | Ex-Amazon, Microsoft | Explicitly targets tier-3: "I'll help every student from tier-3 college to land his/her first job" (post) | 450 DSA sheet, 140+ lecture DSA playlist | "Supreme" batches |
| Aditya Verma | — | Pattern-first teaching (DP families: 0/1 & unbounded knapsack, LCS, MCM) | DP, recursion, binary search, sliding window, heap playlists | — |
| Anuj Bhaiya (Coding Shuttle) | NSUT; ex-Amazon, Urban Company | Early DSA Prime students placed mostly off-campus | YouTube | DSA Prime ₹4.9–5.9 K; claims "13.2 LPA avg" but "we cannot guarantee a job, no one can!" (site) |
| Harkirat Singh, 100xDevs | IIT Roorkee; 2× GSoC (not non-IIT, but loudest voice for the open-source/remote route) | "In open-source, contributions are all that matters, neither your time zone, your accent, nor which college you went to" (newsletter). Build lots of projects; token PRs worthless; DSA matters for Indian firms, less for remote/abroad; tier-2/3 should use hackathons and shipping products to get noticed (summary) | Huge free YouTube | Web dev / DevOps / Web3 / AI cohorts |
| Kunal Kushwaha, WeMakeDevs | Failed JEE twice; MAIT Delhi; "attended ZERO lectures"; open source → UK Global Talent visa (freeCodeCamp) | Open source + remote work over CP (a post reports no Codeforces for 4 years — unverified snippet) | Java DSA Bootcamp, WeMakeDevs community | — |
| Shradha Khapra & Aman Dhattarwal, Apna College | Aman: NSUT; Shradha: ex-Microsoft | Zero-to-placement for beginners, Hinglish | Beginner DSA + web-dev playlists | Alpha / Delta / Sigma batches |
| Nishant Chahar | NSIT; ex-Microsoft; AlgoPrep | Placement roadmaps aimed at tier-2/3 cities; promotes a tier-3 → service co → Amazon last-round rejection → Microsoft story (post) | Sessions | — |
| Shashwat Tiwari | — | Design before coding; read constraints ("there itself you will get to know which Algo/DS will satisfy"); "Consistency is the king" (58-day LC streak); regrets starting contests late (post) | Free YouTube DSA course | — |
| Rohit Negi, Coder Army | Tier-3 B.Tech (GB Pant) → GATE AIR 202 → IIT Guwahati M.Tech → Uber ₹2.05 Cr CTC (~₹96 L base) (DNA) | Lesson: GATE → IIT M.Tech is a legit route to IIT-campus access for tier-3 B.Techs | 726-Q sheet | Coder Army courses |
| Tanay Pratap | Ex-Microsoft; neoG Camp | "15 LPA checklist": with < 6 months and ≤ 50% of the checklist, take any dev job first; target high-pay only at 70%+. "Experience in a web dev job is a lot more valuable than money" — startup hikes of 100–150% after a year beat chasing the first salary (Substack) | Blog, YouTube | neoG |
| Keerti Purswani | NIT Calicut EEE (non-CS) → startup → Intuit (GfG) | "Your college marks or degree don't define you. Your skill is what will decide your future." Talk while you code; do mocks | YouTube | Educosys DSA/LLD/HLD |
| Gaurav Sen | Ex-Uber, Directi, Morgan Stanley | System design as a differentiator (not the fresher filter) | System-design YouTube | InterviewReady, AI-engineering cohort |
| Hitesh Choudhary, Chai aur Code | — | Dev-first; "Web Development Roadmap 2025 with GenAI". (A viral "DSA se hi sab hoga" tweet appears to be one half of a satirical pair — don't cite as his view) | Chai aur Code YouTube | Courses |
| NeetCode (global) | Ex-Google | "Just get started and don't overthink it." Unseen medium in 20–25 min = ready | NeetCode 150/250 + videos | NeetCode Pro |
Where they agree (consensus playbook)
- DSA is the main filter for Indian product companies at ₹15 L+ — even build-first voices (Harkirat) concede it for India.
- One sheet, finished, with daily consistency — not sheet-hopping.
- Patterns over memorised solutions (Aditya Verma's families, NeetCode's roadmap).
- College tier is a starting handicap, not a ceiling; off-campus is the main route (Striver, Keerti, Nishant, Tanay).
- Proof of work beyond DSA: real projects and meaningful open source, not token PRs.
- Peers and community (Striver's college club, WeMakeDevs) and mock interviews.
- Referrals come after you've built something to vouch for.
Where they disagree
| Axis | DSA-first camp | Build-first camp |
|---|---|---|
| Main lever | Sheets + contests (Striver, Babbar, Arsh, Anuj, Negi) | Projects, open source, hackathons, remote (Harkirat, Kunal) |
| First job | Hold out, aim high with product-company prep | Take any dev job, switch in 12 months (Tanay) |
| Competitive programming | Contests help (Shashwat, Arsh's referral bar) | Not needed (Kunal) |
| Tier-3 route | Off-campus grind | GATE → IIT M.Tech (Negi); service → product switch (Nishant) |
Reconciling them: for Indian ₹20 L+ product roles, DSA is non-negotiable; for remote/global roles and startups, shipped work dominates. The strongest non-IIT profiles do both: DSA to pass the interview, a real project/open-source record to get the interview.
On paid courses: every major creator now sells something. Free tiers are sufficient to prepare; paid tiers mostly add structure, doubt support and accountability. Placement stats are published by the sellers themselves and unaudited.
7. The synthesised 12-month plan
Built from the data above (interviewing.io, sheet timelines, challenge calendar). Assume ~3–4 hrs/day alongside college. Start at the latest by the June before pre-final year ends.
| Months | DSA | Build / proof | Other |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1–2 | Language + basics; A2Z steps 1–5 (arrays, hashing, binary search, strings) | Pick ONE project idea that solves a real problem | Set up LeetCode/Codeforces/GitHub/LinkedIn properly |
| 3–4 | Recursion, linked lists, stacks/queues, sliding window, two pointers | Ship v1 of the project, deployed | Start weekly LC contests (just participate) |
| 5–6 | Trees, BST, heaps, graphs (BFS/DFS/topo/Dijkstra) | Get 10+ real users or a first open-source PR | Apply for internships; GSoC/LFX proposals (Feb–Apr) |
| 7–8 | DP (Aditya Verma families), greedy, tries; ~100 mediums done → shift to hards | Iterate project v2; write a short case study | Register for HackOn (Apr–May), GRiD/Juspay/WeForShe/Sparkathon (Jun–Jul) |
| 9–10 | Mixed timed practice: 2 mediums in 45 min; 1 hard/day | Machine coding: 5–8 classics in 90 min each | OS/DBMS/CN/OOP in 4–6 weeks; SQL practice |
| 11 | SDE sheet / NeetCode 150 revision; company-tagged problems | LLD revision | STAR stories for Amazon LPs; mock interviews (peers / Pramp) |
| 12 | Maintain; contests for rating | — | Referral outreach (50 companies/mo), off-campus applications, track everything |
Targets to hit by month 12: ~400–500 problems (~100+ hards); CF Expert or LC Knight if you enjoy contests; 1 deployed project you can defend deeply; 5+ timed machine-coding solutions on GitHub; 8 STAR stories; applications to every open challenge in the calendar.
Fallback strategy (per Tanay Pratap): if you're at < 50% readiness 6 months before graduating, take the best ₹8–15 L dev job available and keep prepping — a 1-year SDE with real work experience interviews for ₹20–30 L+ roles with a much weaker college filter.
Alternate route: GATE → IIT/IIIT M.Tech (Rohit Negi's path) — 2 extra years but full IIT-campus access, including quant firms.
8. Market context 2025–26
- Growth is at the very top: IIT KGP's B.Tech median rose only 4.5% (flat after inflation) and the director called 2024-25 "slow", while quant/HFT and AI-product firms drove the ₹1 Cr+ band (IITian Vibes).
- Entry-level openings down ~44% YoY; fresher share of tech hiring ~28% → ~15%; demand shifting to AI/cloud/security (Outlook Business).
- IT services hire volume but only raise the top track: Infosys targeted ~20,000 freshers in FY26 and lifted Specialist Programmer pay to ₹11/16/21 L citing an "AI-first approach", while TCS Ninja stayed ~₹3.4 L (Storyboard18). → The SP/Digital/Prime tiers of service firms are now a real ₹15–21 L route for tier-3.
- Active non-IIT hirers in the data: fintech/product (PhonePe, Groww, Razorpay, CRED) and GCCs (Goldman, BNY, Walmart, Visa, Salesforce).
- Risks: Oracle revoked many 2025 internship conversions; firms send lower tracks to tier-2 campuses; long off-campus timelines.
- AI skills: creators' curricula are shifting (TUF+ "AI Pass", Gaurav Sen's AI-engineering cohort, 100xDevs AI track, Hitesh's "roadmap with GenAI"), and a deployed AI project is increasingly cited as a differentiator — but no creator has a clear, sourced "DSA matters less now" statement. DSA remains the filter; AI is the tie-breaker.
9. Caveats — things this research could not verify
- Nearly all per-company CTCs are self-reported (LeetCode, trackers) — packages vary by team, year, negotiation and location.
- Challenge dates/eligibility change every season; several (Amazon WoW, Atlassian WiT 2026, Adobe, Microsoft Engage, Amex Makeathon 2025/26) weren't confirmed for the current cycle.
- Not researched this pass: CRED/Sprinklr/Salesforce/Visa/Mastercard/Intuit/Zomato hiring contests, Accenture Innovation Challenge.
- No verifiable tier-3 college placement report was found; the Thapar tracker and a DJSCE PDF couldn't be re-fetched (figures carried from earlier research).
- Creator views are paraphrased from text sources (no transcripts); the Kunal Kushwaha "no Codeforces" post and Shradha Khapra's reported ₹43 L are unverified; the Hitesh "DSA se hi sab hoga" tweet is likely satirical.
- Course-seller placement stats and "cold applying < 2% success"-type numbers are unaudited.
- Referral statistics are US data.
